You employ a nanny. Your kids are all school-aged. Your nanny gets the kids ready for school and then takes them to school. Later, she picks them up from school and attends to them until you return home from work. But what about that period in the middle? Should you pay the nanny while the kids are in school?
The answer is that it depends on the following factors.
- Can you delegate additional work to keep the nanny busy during the school day? For example, could she be kept busy with housekeeping, organizing play dates and other activities for your kids, preparing family dinners, etc.? Could she volunteer as a paraprofessional at your kids’ school?
- Could your nanny take school day college classes that may benefit her in her nanny capacity? For example, if you would like your children to learn to speak Spanish, perhaps your nanny can take Spanish classes at your local community college and share her lessons with your kids.
- Could you find another family to co-employ your nanny? Perhaps this other family only needs a nanny during the school day . . . such as in the case of two working parents, one of whom is a teacher, and a child who is not yet school aged. Or perhaps the other family has kids who attend the same schools as yours do as well as one child who is not yet school aged: in this scenario, the nanny would transport the kids of both families to school, watch the one child not of school age during the school day, and pick up and attend to kids of both families after school.
- Is your nanny interested in working a split shift? Is she willing to work part-time?
- Is your nanny live-in or live-out? If yours is a live-out nanny, how long is her commute from her house to yours? Does she have reliable transportation?
- Does your budget support paying your nanny full-time?
By considering the above factors and discussing the issue with your nanny, you and your nanny can make the decision that is right for all involved.
